END OF THE REGULAR SEASON
The 2024 MLB regular season has concluded, and the postseason picture is now set! After 162 games of thrilling action, the final standings are in, and the teams ready for October baseball have been decided. Let’s take a look at how each division finished, along with a breakdown of the upcoming matchups.
AL East Division
The New York Yankees (94-68) finished on top of the AL East, clinching the division title and securing the top seed in the American League. Their consistent play throughout the season and strong finish made the difference. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Orioles (91-71) had an excellent season as well, securing a Wild Card spot and finishing 3 games behind the Yankees. The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays both ended at 81-81, falling short of the postseason. The Toronto Blue Jays (74-88) were eliminated from contention much earlier.
AL Central Division
The Cleveland Guardians (92-69) clinched the AL Central with a well-rounded season. The Kansas City Royals (86-76) and Detroit Tigers (86-76) also had impressive campaigns, finishing 6.5 games back and grabbing Wild Card spots. Minnesota’s hopes faded late as they ended up at 82-80, missing the postseason. The Chicago White Sox (41-121) endured a season to forget.
AL West Division
The Houston Astros (93-69) dominated the AL West, finishing with the best record in the division. Despite a strong push by the Seattle Mariners (88-74), they couldn’t overtake the Astros and fell short of the Wild Card. The Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, and Los Angeles Angels finished well below .500, all eliminated from contention early in September.
NL East Division
The Philadelphia Phillies (95-67) took the NL East title, staying strong through a competitive division. The Atlanta Braves (89-73) and New York Mets (89-73) each clinched Wild Card spots, making the NL East the only division with three teams in the postseason. The Nationals (71-91) and Marlins (62-100) had seasons to forget.
NL Central Division
The Milwaukee Brewers (93-69) clinched the NL Central crown with a combination of strong pitching and timely hitting. Despite solid records, the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs both finished 10 games back and were eliminated from postseason contention. The Reds and Pirates were competitive at times, but they also failed to make a serious run at the playoffs.
NL West Division
The Los Angeles Dodgers (98-64) were the best team in the National League, winning the NL West comfortably. The San Diego Padres (93-69) clinched a Wild Card spot and have been playing some of their best baseball lately. The Arizona Diamondbacks (89-73) were also competitive but just missed out, finishing 4 games back. The Giants and Rockies never really got going this season, as the strong competition in the division left them well behind.
American League Wild Card Race
The three AL Wild Card teams are the Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, and Detroit Tigers. The Mariners were close, but it was the Orioles who clinched the top spot with a solid finish to the season. The Royals and Tigers were neck-and-neck, and both teams made it to October baseball for the first time in years.
National League Wild Card Race
In the NL, the Braves, Mets, and Padres claimed the Wild Card spots. The Braves and Mets were competitive in the NL East, while the Padres were solid throughout the year. The Diamondbacks missed out after losing a few crucial games late in the season.
Postseason Seeding
The postseason seeding for both leagues is set. In the AL, the Yankees have the top seed, followed by the Guardians and Astros. The Wild Card matchups feature the Orioles facing the Royals, and the Tigers playing the Astros. In the NL, the Dodgers have the top seed, followed by the Phillies and Brewers. The Wild Card matchups include the Brewers vs. Mets and Braves vs. Padres. Top seeds have a bye and advance directly to the ALDS/NLDS.
