Gerrit Cole is out for the season - Yankees rotation in tatters?
The Yankees have been rocked with the news that Gerrit Cole is out for the season. By far their leading ace, Cole was key for the Yankees to remain strong following the loss of Juan Soto to the Mets. The Yankees starting rotation now looks like this:
Carlos Rodon
Max Fried
Marcus Stroman
Will Warren
Carlos Carrasco
The signing of Max Fried allays some concerns but the Yankees lost Nestor Cortes in a trade for closer Devin Williams, as Luis Gil has gone for an MRI with shoulder discomfort which would really be the nail in the coffin. So as per Roster Resource, the Yankees pitchers are ranked:
31
24
120
323
184
Ouch. And on diving into their stats last year, Max Fried is at number 11 in our top 100 pitchers, Rodon is at 92 in the list, (although Gil is at 47, it doesn't look good for him). Will Warren threw 22.2 IP with a TBA9 of a whopping 27.97 and an ERA of 10.3. Carrasco put in some innings for the Guardians but finished with an ERA of 5.64 and a TBA9 of 20.76. Not great.
It's fair to say that the Yankees will be relying on Fried and their chances of reaching the World Series again are in real jeopardy.
